The first week of the season saw an early matchup between the Orange Crush and the Brevard Rockets. In the first game, the Varsity B teams matched up. The scoring was kicked off by Orange County with a low driver by Bryson Labrecque that was tipped in by Jocelin Hudanish. The 1-0 lead held into the 2nd period but the Rockets answered by with an unassisted goal by Steven Rossi. After a penalty by the Crush, Steven Rossi put the Rockets on top with a power play goal assisted by Cody McCauley. The Crush answered back in 31 seconds with a goal by Hauken Barber assisted by Jack Odum. The Rockets proved to be too much in the 3rd period for the Crush’s depleted defensive core who were skating 3 defenseman during the game. Steven Rossi completed the first Hat Trick of the season with an unassisted goal for the game winner and James Sorenson put the insurance goal in the net for the Rockets with an assist from Anton Buca.
After the entertaining first game of the season, it was time for the Varsity A squads to hit the ice. The night cap proved to be a physical contest that saw a 3rd period with 40 minutes of penalties. The game got off to a quick start with a nice Crush goal by Nick Panfen quietly sneaking through the slot for some 4th man offense. The rest of the 1st period and most of the second period was fought to a stalemate as teams worked to get the action going. With just 28 seconds left in the 2nd period, Hunter Chard slid a goal past Scotty Barnikow on a great pass by Nick Panfen to put the Crush up 2-0 heading into the 3rd. Parker Mara scored a power play goal from the left dot to give the Crush a 3-0 lead. The Rockets wouldn’t go away and scored with 6 minutes left in the game to break up the shut out as Matt Ayers scored assisted by Leif Erickson and James Barral. Nick Ryall who is normally the Orange Crush Varsity B goalie turned away 30 of 31 shots and was recognized by his teammates with a loud cheer after the game.
